Osteoporosis is often called the “Silent Thief” because it steals your bone density without a single warning sign. Unlike arthritis, which announces itself with pain, osteoporosis is silent—until the moment you suffer a fracture from a minor bump or fall. For us seniors, a broken hip isn’t just an injury; it’s the number one threat to our long-term independence.
The medical reality is that you cannot “feel” your bones getting thinner. To protect yourself, you must learn to spot the subtle signs and fortify your defenses before a break occurs.
Symptom: The “Shrinking” Spine Have you noticed you are losing height or stooping forward slightly when you see your reflection in the shop window? This is not just “getting old.” It is often the first visible sign of vertebral compression fractures. As the honeycomb structure of our vertebrae weakens, tiny fractures cause the spine to settle and curve forward (Kyphosis).
