Four prisoners are buried in the ground up to their necks, in a line. Prisoner A (in back) can see B, C, and D. Prisoner B can see C and D. Prisoner C can see D. Prisoner D (in front) sees nobody. There’s a wall between A and the other three — so A sees nobody behind the wall (but can see B, C, D in front). The warden puts a hat on each prisoner’s head — either black or white. There are 2 black hats and 2 white hats total. If any prisoner correctly shouts their own hat color, all four are freed. If anyone guesses wrong, all four are executed. They may only speak once — and they have 5 minutes. Who calls out, and how do they know?

Wait, let me fix the setup. Actually: 4 prisoners, 2 black hats, 2 white hats. A sees B, C, D. B sees C, D. C sees D. D sees nobody. No wall (let’s simplify). If nobody speaks after a minute, what does that tell the person who CAN figure it out?

Puzzle: The Burning Ropes — measure 45 minutes with two uneven-burning 60-min ropes.
✅ Answer: Light Rope 1 from BOTH ends (burns in 30 min) AND simultaneously light Rope 2 from ONE end. When Rope 1 finishes burning (30 min), immediately light the OTHER end of Rope 2. Rope 2 has 30 minutes of rope left but burning from both ends = 15 more minutes. 30 + 15 = 45 minutes.
