Household outage planning
An emergency-information plan should not depend on one device, one battery, or one connection. Use this worksheet to decide what information source and backup method your household needs.
This is general preparedness information, not emergency advice. During an emergency, follow directions from local emergency management and official weather authorities. A radio or alert device does not replace evacuation instructions, 911, or a household communication plan.
Map the information gap first
Consider the outages and hazards relevant to the household, the places where information may be needed, language or hearing needs, and the people who should receive the same message. Keep a written list of local emergency contacts and meeting arrangements away from the device.
Compare the plan, not a product ranking

Questions for the household plan
- Where will the device be stored so it can be reached during an outage?
- When will batteries, charging, and reception be checked?
- Who receives alerts if one person cannot hear or operate the device?
- What official local source will the household use for evacuation, shelter, or safety instructions?
- What is the fallback if power, mobile data, or a device is unavailable?
